RATES OF PAYMENT DIFFERENTIATION ASPECT (Per Press Association) WHANGAREI, Last Night. A public meeting convened by the Whangarei Unemployed Workers’ Association in the Town Hall last night unanimously carried the following motion: —“That this meeting of citizens vigorously protests against the injustice of paying the unemployed in this district a lower rate than those in the larger towns, and points out to the Minister that the more attractive conditions in cities are having a serious effect on the balance of population in country centres.” The chairman of the association declared that he would hold meetings weekly, if necessary, until the demands were met.

The deputy-mayor, who presided, gave an assurance of continued support of the borough council. A similar promise was given by the Chamber of Commerce, which is taking the matter up with the Minister. The Rev. Mr Steele (Anglican) and Father Herring vigorously espoused th e m en’s cause.
