OUT IN THE GARDEN
THE WEEK’S WORK AMONG THE FLOWERS Keep Chrysanthemum blooms tied securely. Cease applying liquid cow manure once the flowers show colour. Continue to disbud Chrysanthemums where necessary. Dahlias must be securely tied. Remove spent blooms. Cut out some of the weak laterals to prevent tops getting too thick and heavy. Plant Beauty Stock, Iceland Poppies, Gaillardias, Pansies, Wallflowers. Transplant into nursery beds, Campanulas, Delphiniums, Sweet Williams, Canterbury Bells. Discard any out-of-date sorts of Dahlias. Now is the time to select a few varieties for next season's planting. Finish all bulb planting as soon as possible. Plant Anemones and Ranunculus. THE VEGETABLE PLOT Clean off spent crops. Prepare ground for replanting or sow a cover crop. Mustard is a good cover crop. It is also useful as a vegetable if gathered before flowers open. Raised beds for winter crops are an advantage. In heavy soils make a sowing of Broad Beans. Prepare ground for Onion and Potato planting. Sow Onion seed for providing plants for spring planting. Harvest Onions, Pumpkins, Kumaras as they mature. Tomatoes should be kept tied up and the laterals removed. Pick the fruit and ripen it indoors.
