FAT SHEEP VALUES

AT STORTFORD LODGE NO CHANGE IN RULING RATES Unchanged prices ruled at yesterday’s sale of fat sheep. All lines sold well, export buyers competing keenly amongst each other to obtain their requirements. The total yarding was over (5000 head of sheep. Lambs made good prices, on a par with last week, although some secondquality lines were slightly easier. Top price was 13/9, realised for a pen of 11 prime Blackface lambs. A line of 37 Blackface lambs, in medium order, offered on account of Mr C. Small, made 11/2. On account of Mr G. W. Neilson, a pen of 25 lightweight lambs sold at 9/--Seventy-two ia the line, a draft of prime lambs offered on account of Mr M. Ryan, realised 12/-. Ewes were well represented, some prime lines offered on account of the Tod Estate, Otane, making top price of 8/2 for a pen of 25 prime ewes, a further pen of 28 making 8/1. Down oy lorry from "Atua” Station, a pen of 37 prime ewes made 7/10; a further pen of 1.8 selling for 7/9.

The number of wethers offering were in the minority, top price for any number being 11/11 for a pen of 30 prime wethers, offered on account of Mr Geo. Priest, Pukehou. A pen of three wethers in similar condition sold at 12/-. Range of Prices—Prime lambs to 13/9. others from 8/7; prime ewes 7/- to 8/2. others from 5/3; 2-th ewes to 10/-. STORE SHEEP SELL WELL , GOOD BACK-COUNTRY DRAFTS With a fair yarding of store sheep, the values obtaining in the store sheep section at yesterday’s sale were firm with late rates. As with store cattle, the fact that there is a shortage of feed locally seems to have made but little difference to the demand for this class of stock. * Included amongst the entries were a number of back-country drafts which compared very favourably with many of the fat-sheep entries. The tone of the market was good, and although prices were on a par with last week, the sale was bright, and bidding was well maintained. Two-tooth wethers, a pen of 518, in store to forward order, on account of the East Coast Commissioner, made 10/4 and 10/7 in two cuts. A further draft on account of the East Coast Commissioner, a line of 340 forward conditioned 2-th wethers, realised 10/8. Two hundred and eighty in the line, a further draft of 4-th wetners from the East Coast Commissioner, in good store condition sold at 10/5. Store-conditioned 2-th wethers, 380 in the line, made 8/9. Fat and forward, a line of 186 4-th wethers offered on account of the East Coast Commissioner realised 11/4. Wether lambs, a line of 157 in store to forward condition, sold at 7/9. Down from Alrig Station, a line of forwa d conditioned ewe lambs realised 9/2. Fat and forward ewe lambs 117 in the line, an excellent draft of sheep, made 12/-. AVell-grown shorn ewe lambs ,a line of 200 in forward order, sold for 10/6. A Wairoa draft of woolly wether Blackface lambs in store condition reached 8/6. A further draft of Ruakituri sheep, a pen of wether lambs in store order, made 7/10. From the same locality a line of small store-conditioned lambs realised 5/6. Another pen of Olrig Station wether lambs in forward condition made 9/6. Forward conditioned wethers, a pen of 50, made 10/-.

SATISFACTORY DEMAND SALE OF STORE CATTLE Considering the fact that there is a prevailing shortage of cattle feed in Hawke’s Bay at the present, the sale of store cattle at Stortford Lodge could bo called very satisfactory, some 700 head of store stock being offered on account of various vendors. Some of the entries, and the prices paid, from which readers may judge the tone of the market, were as follow: —• Down from Mohaka, a draft of 20 forward-conditioned P.A. cows realised £1 14s. Fifty-five in the line, a draft of 18mos. P.A. steers in store condition, also from Mohaka, sold at £2 Is. Dehorned Hereford steers, a pen of

35 3j-yr in good store order, and offered on account of the East Coast Commissioner, made £3 6s. A line of 44 half-bred Hereford 3jyr steers, in store condition were disposed of for £3. Down from Kotemaori, and offered on account of Messrs Bee and Bee, a draft of 44 3j-yr P.A. steers, a line of well-grown and well-bred animals, realised £3 10s. A further draft of Ruakiture cattle, on account of the East Coast Commissioner, 50 dehorned Hereford 3Uyr steers, in store condition sold at £3 Ils. P.A. cows with calves, the cows pastured with a P.A. bull, a pen of 30 realised £1 16s. From the East Coast Commissioner, a pen of 51 4-yr dehorned Hereford bullocks, well-framed and fairly well finished made £4 la. A line of 15 store conditioned 31-yr P.A. steers went at £2 4s. Forward-conditioned, a pen of 20 P.A. 34-yr steers realised £3 3/6. A Kotemaori draft of P.A. heifers store-conditioned, sold at 355. Bullock Prices Four light conditioned Hereford bullocks sold early in the sale for £4 5/-. £5 16/6 bought a single Hereford bullock, big framed and fairly well covered. In the same pen, a pair of crossbred bullocks in lighter condition realised £4 18/6. A single P.A. crossbred bullock, fairly framed and in forward condition, made £4 19/6. Tn from Mr Colin White, Te Auto, a pen of Hereford and Hereford crossbred bullocks, fair framed and nicely finished, sold at prices ranging from £5 to £5 4s. A further pen of Hcrefords from Mr Colin White, not so well finished as the previous offering, made £5. A single Hereford crossbred bullock in the same pen sold at £4 18/6. Two small-framed Hereford crossbred steers, store conditioned and small framed, realised £2. A single big-framed Hereford bullock in medium prime order, fetched £6 ss. In the same pen a lighter bullock brought £5 10s.

Three crossbred bullocks in medium prime order realised £5 18/G, while three nuggety P.A. crosbred bullocks, fairly well covered, sold at £4 15s. Four P.A. bullocks, medium sized beasts, and fairly well covered, brought £5 3s. Five other bullocks in similar order realised £5 Is. The last of the pen, three P.A. bullocks, lighter condition and smaller framed, brought £4 10s. Offered on account of Mr J. Donald, a single Hereford bullock, big framed and in prime order sold readily at £7 15/6. A smaller framed medium prime Hereford bullock sold at £5 16/6. Two other Hereford bullocks, big framed and in medium to prime order made £6 16s. Three Hereford crossbred bullocks, good framed and well-finished young beasts, realised £6 17/6. A further draft of bullocks from Mr J. Donald, two Herefords in medium prime order made £7. In the same pen a single beast, smaller framed but better finished sold at £7 ss. Six pounds bought a pair of Hereford crossbred bullocks, in light prime order, offered on account of Mr J. Donald. In the same pen a single small framed but weighty Hereford bullock realised £5 Bs. On account of Mr L. R. Averil, “Whanakino” Station, a single P.A. bullock, in medium prime order sold at £6 ss. In the same pen, three lighter P.A. crossbred bullocks made £5 15s, and three JP.A. bullocks in similar order made £5 Ils. In from “Echills” Station on account of Mr E. Averill, two P.A. crossbred bullocks, in medium prime order mode £6 4s. A single P.A. bullock in the same pen, small framed and medium finished, sold, at £4 10s. Two further P.A. bullocks, in light prime condition, made £5 2s 6d. Two Red Poll cross bullocks in light prime order, fair framed beasts, realised £5 4/6, two others in forward condition making £3 10s. On account of Mr Arthur Small, a pen of five Hereford bullocks, good framed and well finished, sold at £5 5s and £5 in two cuts. A further uraft of young Hereford bullocks from Mr Arthur Small, in similar order to the above, realised £4 17/6 and £4 10s. On accoiAt of Mr W. Campbell, “Irongatc, ” a pen of seven P.A. crossbred bullocks, forward conditioned and good framed, made £4 18s. Cow and Heifer Prices Two, crossbred cows, medium finished and fair framed, passed at £2 17/6. On account of Greenwood Bros., Middle road, a pen of three P.A. cows, big framed and well covered, realised £4 ss. . . Four P.A. cows, similar finish to the

previous pen of P.A. cows, sold at £4 2/6. A single Hereford cow, small framed and medium finished, realised £3 10s. A single P.A. cow, fair framed but lightly finished, sold for £2 ss. In from Paki Paki a pen of 10 P.A. cows, mixed quality beasts, were passed at £3 ss. £2 10s bought a jingle Hereford cow in forward store condition. A single crossbred cow in medium condition sold well at £3. In from Greenwood Bros., a pen of four P.A. heifers, the best offering in the heifer beef, well finished and big framed, made £5 2s. A further three P.A. heifers from the same vendor lighter conditioned animals sold at £4 12/6. On account of Mr J. J. Lyons, “Greenhill” Station a single Hereford heifer, medium finished and fair framed, realised £3 4/6. In the same pen, another Hereford heifer, in heavier condition made £4 5/6. A pen of eight Hereford heifers, medium sized, lightly covered animals, sold at prices ranging from £2 6s to £2 12/6. A pair of Hereford heifers, on account of Mr Colin White, Te Aute, brought £3 2s. Seven in the pen, a draft of Hereford heifers, small framed and lightly covered, made £2 17s. P.A. heifers, a pen of five fair framed medium finished cattle, sold at £3 9s. Late in the sale a pen of P.A. heifers, in prime condition, sold well at £5 ss.
