OLD MAN’S END

THE PICTON TRAGEDY THE CASE AGAINST TARRANT (Per Press Association) BLENHEIM, Last Night. I The Police Court hearing of the charge against Edward Tarrant of murdering James Flood at Picton, on November 3, 1931, was continued this afternoon. | General witnesses were called by the prosecution in rebuttal of statements made by the accused to the police as to his whereabouts on the night of the alleged murder. Corroborative evidence was given as to the finding of the body and its position. The prosecution adduced voluminous evidence tending to show that, subsequent to the murder, the accused had paid debts owed by him more freely than before. Jabez Bluzzard, agent for the owner of the house the accused occupied, said that he had pushed the accused for arrears of rent owing. The accused did not pay when he promised on November 2, but he said he would endeavour to get the money the money the next day. On November 4 he paid £2l in notes and promised to pay the balance in instalments every month. The evening sitting was taken up with trailing notes alleged to have been changed with business firms by the accused, some of the notes being stained with what looked like rust and bearing rusty marks.
