ASSAULT ON TAXI-DRIVER FOLLOWED BY ROBBERY AUCKLAND, Last Night. The police arc investigating a report made by a taxi-driver that he was violently assaulted and robbed near Victoria Park early on Friday morning. The driver, Mr J. Bickerstaff, of 11 Tennysdn Street, Grey Lynn, states that he was hailed by two men in Ponsonby road shortly after three o’clock in the morning. The men asked to be driven to Western Wharf and noth sat in the back seat. “When I was driving past Victoria Park, one of the men asked me to pull up for a moment,” states Mr Bickerstaff. “I did this and was turning round to the men when I was seized round the throat. One of the men held me while the other rifled the pockets of my clothing. They took all the money I had, about £l.” After the incident the men made their escape through Victoria Park. The only description given of them was that one was tall and the other short. They were stated to be possibly seafaring men.
