VERY UNUSUAL

IN RUGBY FOOTBALL. A JUBILANT REFEREE. DUNEDIN, August 22. The Dunedin Star reporter, in his account of the Otago-Southland match at Invercargill, says:—“The Wild jubilation of the crowd was eclipsed only by that of the referee (Mr J. L. Oughton), who threw himself into the air and waved his arms when Porter (Southland) potted the winning goal. He will also be remembered because he allowed the first spell to go for six minutes beyond the proper time, and did not call time in the second half till eight minutes after it was due.” Porter potted the winning goal in the last few minutes of the game.
