NO AGREEMENT

AS TO SHEARERS WAGES CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS Rates of pay were the only obstacle to an agreement being reached between sheepowners’ and shearers’ representatives in yesterday’s proceedings in Wellington before the Conciliation Commissioner, Mr W. Newton. At the. end of the morning the owners were offering 16/8 a hundred, the shearers wanted at least 20/- and both sides wished for an agreement. The afternoon was spent in discussion in committee and although it is understood that the parties came fairly close to each other in their requirements, no agreement was reached. Before yesterday’s discussion conditions in the shearing industry had been the subject of conciliation proceedings at Gisborne. Yesterday’s argument concerned the whole Wellington district, and further proceedings have still to take place at Marlborough, Christchurch, and Dunedin. The sheepowners were represented by the president of the federation, Mr H. D. Ackland, secretary, Mr W. H. Nicholson,* and Mr F. N. Beamish, of Hastings. The respondents, the Wellington Shearers and Shed-hand Workers’ Union were represented by Messrs J. Roberts, A. Cook, R. Wallace and R. Ti Taki.
