FIRE BOARD STAFF

CHANGE IN WELLINGTON THE MAYOR’S CRITICISM Recent changes and dismissals in tho staff of the Wellington Fire Board were discussed at a meeting of the Wellington City Council. Following allegations made some time ago Superintendent Creeks was disrated to the position of deputy-superintendent and DeputySuperintendent Clarke was dismissed. Tho Mayor, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, said the matter had. been gone into by the board, and theji the Auditor-General took a hand. What ho had discovered bore out the revelations w r hich a certain officer had made. Tho things revealed showed an extraordinary slackness over a long period. There was an inquiry, ■which showed that there had been misuse of property over a long neriod.

“Then someone sent a copy of the report to the Auditor-General,” said the Mayor. "The Auditor-General completely supported every allegation the deputy-superintendent had made. The board was still further prejudiced against the deputy-superintendent. He was dismissed, and the superintendent was reduced to the rank of deputysuperintendent. It was actually pro-

posed at one stage that ho be reinstated as superintendent. “The dismissal of the deputy was a, most flagrant and disgraceful injustice. He made revelations which will react to the benefit of citizens, but as a result of stirring up trouble and refusing to work with the superintendent he is out of a job.”
