RELIGIOUS READING

FOR THE SABBATH DAY THE MOTHERS OF THE GREAT What did the mothers of some great souls mean to them? Here are. their answers: — All that I have ever accomplished I owe to my mother.—Dwight L. Moody.

I have carried the remembrance of her- gentle voice and soothing touch all through my life.—Eugene Field. My mother’s influence in moulding my character was conspicuous. She forced me to learn daily long chapters of the Bible by heart. To that discipline and patient, accurate resolve I owe, not only much of ipy general power of taking pains, but the best part of my taste for literature. —Ruskin. All that lam my mother made me.—John Quincy Adams. Mother, you have brought me to this. —James A. Garfield’s statement at his inauguration as President. Mother was one of those strong,, restful, yet widely sympathetic natures, in whom all around seemed to find comfort and repose. She was of’ a “temperament peculiarly restful and peace-giving. Her union of spirit with God, unruffled and unbroken even from early childhood, seemed to impart to her an equilibrium and healthy placidity that no earthly reverses ever disturbed.—Lyman Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. All that I am or hope to be I owe to my mother. —Abraham Lincoln. HOW MUCH SHALL I GIVE? 1. If I refuse to give anything to missions this year, I practically cast a ballot in favour of the recall of every missionary, both in the home and foreign fields. 2. If I give less than heretofore, I favour a reduction of the missionary forces proportionate to my reduced contribution. 3. If I give the same as formerly, I favour holding the ground already won, but I disregard any forward movement. My song is “Hold the Fort!” forgetting that the Lord never intended that His army should take refuge in a fort. All of His soldiers are under marching orders always. They are commanded to “Go!” 4. If I advance my offering beyond former years, then I favour an advance movement in the conquest of new territory for Christ. Shall I not join this class? Resolved: I do believe in greatly increasing the present number of our missionaries; therefore I will increase my former offerings to missionary work.

“OBSCURE BIBLE LOCALITIES”

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Lest eronous ideas be formed respecting the final paragraph of my short article on the above, appearing in last week’s “Press,” I wish, with you permission, to attach the follow'ing comment thereto. “The resurrection hour,” to which I alluded, perhaps needs further elucidation. Two resurrections are yet future, inclusive of “all that are in their graves”; and these, separated by a period of a thousand years (the Millenium). The first, a resurrection* “unto life” occurs at the second coming of Christ to earth: the second, the resurrection “unto judgment,” occurs after the thousand years have been accomplished. It was to the latter I referred when mentioning the “resurrection hour”—the final judgment of the great white throne. My acknowledgments are due and ‘ are gratefully tendered to the authors of “Scofields Reference Bible.”—l am, etc., H.M.
