IS THIS THE WAY OUT?
<s> Cure For Unemployment PLACE 5000 MEN ON THE LAND SUGGESTION FROM WHAKATANE (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON. This Day. A scheme to place five thousand men on the land as a means of overcoming the unemployment problem was placed before the Rt. Hon. J. Gr. Coates, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, and Mr C. E. MacMillan by Mr W Sullivan, Mayor of Whakatane, and Messrs P. L. Baird and A. C. Sutherland, representing a committee of residents in the Whakatane district, who formulated it.
The basis of the scheme is an internal loan of £6,150,000 and the proposed settlement is of a permanent character on Crown land suitable for dairying. The scheme is to bo open to anyone who, in the opinion of the committee appointed to control the scheme, would become a suitable settlor and who is not possessed of sufficient land to make a living.
The Ministers agreed that the scheme was worthy of consideration.
