GARBAGE COLLECTION
Objection Is Lodged
AGAINST HIGHER FEE
THAN FOR SIMILAR SERVICE
Messrs. A. Moore, M. Ujdur, A. Rusher, and F. Tinney, Mesdames H. Hutchinson, and E. J. Findlay and Miss E. M. Moriarty, as the proprietors and proprietresses of eating-houses, petitioned the Borough Council, which met last night, as to the fee charged for garbage collection, it being held that the charge should be brought down to 13/- per annum and into line with other main street businesses. “We do not have any more garbage collected than the others, as twice weekly a man comes round and takes all the scraps for his pigs,” it was stated. The Mayor said that although requested in 1922 by the Health Department that eating-houses be visited daily for garbage removal purposes, the council had decided upon a bi-weekly service at £1 6s per annum.
The Mayor said that action by the Council was mandatory when called upon by the Health authorities. Cr. McCormick said that his premises were visited twice each week and Cr. McCarthy stated that he had been informed that originally the service was a tri-weekly one.
Cr. Chambers said that all shops should be treated alike as to the cost of a similar service. The town clerk pointed out that fish shops were visited tri-weekly.
The Mayor said that it appeared that other shopkeepers were getting a better service than what they were paying for, and Cr. McCarthy held that the latter only needed visiting once weekly.
It was generally agreed that once weekly wou'-l be adequate.
The Ma r held that the service as far as the premises specially required would need to be provided.
Inspectoi’ Gardner stated that the council had requested shopkeepers to put out their garbage on Mondays and Thursdays.
Cr. McCarthy said that the petitioners had been entitled to a triweekly service instead of bi-weekly. Cr. Mackie pointed out that the general body of shopkeepers were getting a two days’ service instead of the one day to which they are entitled.
The Mayor stated that the fish shops should be charged £1 6s per annum and other premises 13/-. The inclusion of hotels and boardinghouses was suggested by a councillor, also fruit and butcher shops, restaurants, etc.
Cr. McCormick held that the bylaw should be carried out. On the motion of Cr. Chambers the matter was deferred till next meeting, the inspector to report.
