CANADIAN-N.Z. TREATY
BILL PASSED IN OTTAWA NOT WITHOUT CRITICISM OTTAWA, May 13. The New Zealand Trade Treaty Bill was subjected to a general attack in the Senate to-day, several Opposition members criticising it for “instability,” lack of preferences for Canadian products and failure to protect woolgrowers, but the unamended measure was adopted and given the Royal assent.
The Government leader, Mr Mcighan, sponsoring the bill, said he believed its adoption by Parliament would have a beneficial influence on the atmosphere of the Economic Conference. A proclamation bringing the treaty into effect will be promulgated on a date suitable to New Zealand.
