THE WOOL SALES,

MARKET STILL FIRM,

London, May 24.

At the London wool sales 90,000 bales were sold for Home consumption, 57,000 for the Continent, 9000 for America, and 9000 was held over. The departure of some of the chief buyers and the diminished American competition, caused irregularity this j WGfik* Compared with the closing prices of March sales, best greasy 1 merino remained practically unchanged ; medium and inferiors were 5 percent, higher till Monday, cluein- at par to 5 per cent, higher ; scoureds were in strong request at a 5 percent, advance; medium crossbreds suitable for America sometimes declined a halfpenny J topmakers’ sorts closed very firm at opening rates, but lost the extreme pric 9 of the middle aeries; larali is unchanged, The outlook is promising, and there is small prospect ol any alleviation m the tightness of the market till the new clip ftniyes ?

Supplies for the current year are likely to be altogether inadequate at the present rate of consumption. The fleece portions of the following clips were sold: —Motuna, Is£d; JRakio, 18fd ; Puketoi, 12gd ; Okerae, 18£d. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. Wellington, May 24.
