A Narrow Escape.

A HEROIC WOMAN.

There was a very narrow escape ef a serious accident at ihe Makotuku viaduct on Monday evening. The 5.15 train from Napier was approaching the viaduct. A Uotsa which had strayed on to the line, hearing the noise of the approaching train, apparently became startled and rushed on to the bridge, which, it wid be remembered, is a very high one without sides. The horse became jammed there. A lady, Mrs Loftley, whose house is close to the bridge, seeing the danger, seized a lighted candle ind rushed on the track. She waved 4be candle in front of her and fortunately the driver of the train saw it. The train was pulled up within a few feet of the horse. The latter was released from his perilous position, and the train proceeded. Bat for the prompt action of Mrs Loftley the train would have probably been thrown clean over the bridge into the creek some 80 feet below.

One grateful passenger has for warded ns 10a as the nucleus of a fund to fittingly refcwd Mrs Loftley for her heroism. "
