LONDON MARKETS. Wellington, Jan. 16. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner dated London, 13th inst-There has been no alteration in the mutton market since last week. The lamb market is quiet, the average price to-day for last season’s New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, bring 4]d. The beef market is depressed. The average price for hindquarters of New Zealand beef to-day is 3{d per lb, fores 2?J Butter—The market is firm and there is a good demand. Moderate supplies are coming forward. The price for choicest New Zealand butter to day is 117 s per cwt, Danish 1245, Australian and Argentine 113 s. Cheese —The market is steady, but the demand only moderate at 63s per cwt. Hemp—The market is v ry firm and stock is being reduced. Tlure is no change in prices, but a rise is expected. The stock totals 1099 tons. There are signs of improvement on the cocksfoot seed market, with a better demand. The average p-ice to-day for bright clean N.Z. cocksfoot seed, weighing 17ibs per bushel, is 53s per cwt. Wool —The market remains firm with a good demand for all descriptions. Current Bradford quotations for tops are 3G’s ; low crossbreds Is 3d, 40’s ; low crossbreds Is 3| I, 44’s; medium crossbreds Is sd, 50’s; halfbreds Is 8.1, 56’s ; qu irter-breds Is lOd, GO’s; merinos 2s l]d. Importations of River Plate mutton and lamb into the United Kingdom tor the month of Decuuber totalled 287,677 and 5925 respectively, distributed as follows Mutton :—London 124,134, Liverpool 181,040, Hull, 8180, Newcastle 10,246, Cardiff 7181, Southampton 3300 Plymouth 1600, Glasgow 1996. Lamb, London 1757, Liverpool 4118, Southampton 50. The average price to-day for River Plate mutton is 3]d per lb and lamb 3gd per lb. J. W. BROWN’S SALE AT PAPATAWA. Messrs Abraham & Williams report: — We have to report a most successful clearing sale at Papatawa on Saturday. There was a large attendance of buyers present, several attending from outside districts. The sheep were in particularly good order, especially the two-tooths, which were well grown. Bidding was very spirited, and prices realised greatly exceeded vendors’ expectations. In the cattle line the dairy heifers were a good lot, and sold at a reasonable price, but the steers made full value. Their condition was good, but the line comprised several bad colours. The furniture, which was mostly new and good, sold well. Quotations—4, 6, and 4yr ewes, 14s 4d ; 2-tooth ewes 16s 7d; woolly lambs, 9s 6d; inferior lambs, 7s 6d; wethers, 13s 7d; old ewes, 6s ; small cull lambs, 3s Id. Cattle —Heifers in calf, £2 7s 6d to £2 10s ; crossbred yearlings, 20s 9d ; 18-months steers, £2 12s; 2-year steers, £3 3s 6d ; dry cows, £2 Is. JOHNSONVILLE SALE. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Johnsonville sale as follows : A full entry of bullocks ranging from prime medium weights to light unfinished sorts. Beef made 20s; best bullocks, £8 5s ; others, £7 15s to £8 2s 6d ; light £6 17s 6d to £7 16s, A good yearding of sheep of mixed quality. Best wethers 16s; others 14s Id ; light, 13s 6d; ewes, 14s and 13s; light, 12s; lambs, shorn, 11s lOd to 12s 2d; woolly medium, lls to lls 61. WOOL SALES. Auckland, Jun, 16. The second wool sales of the teaioi were field to-day, when 3755 bales wire' offered, of which a large proportion was sold. Prices dropped for the finer classes of wools to abcut level with list year’s figures, but pieces, etc., were in better demand than before, and advanced from a halfpenny to a penny per pound. For the latter sorts s]d to 7d per lb were the prices, while for best merinos Is, for fine crossbred 10J, and for coarse crossbred 9d were the best sales. Dunedin, Jan. 10. The principal wool sale of the year opened this morning, 13,507 bales offering. Bidders were present from English, American, and Continental bouses. American competition was particularly keen. For all good wool the sale showed generally a better tone than the last one, many passed lots fetching better prices. There was a specially keen demand for bc-hies and pieces, loc J millers beingjthe principal bidders. Prices so far are up to 13,]d per lb for first combing halfbred and crossbred, and pieces up to ll]-d. One lot fetched 14d.
