A public meeting was held on the Bth, to arrange a suitable reception for tho Prince. Ifc was largely attended. The expedition from Townsville to rescue fche whites seen on Hinchinbrook Island, supposed to be the crew of the missing schooner Eva, has returned unsuccessful. The Government intend to effect the rescue of tbe men. Government intend to introduce a bill gradually abolishing the gold duty. Mr Parkes has intimated that an early dissolution of Parliament is likely to take place. The settling on tho Melbourne races was unsatisfactory. The rifle matches terminated on the 9th. It was a very successful meeting, and there was good shooting. In the Allcomers' Match Lynch won the first prize with 132 points in thirty-live sho^s at the Intercolonial Match ranges. This is the best score ever made. Slade scored 130. The Ladies' Prize was won by Compton . the Members' Match was won by Lieutenants Brown and Pye; the Mnrksmens' Match by Captain Bolton ; the Officers' Handicap by Captain Dalmoy; and the Battalion Match by the Sydney Battalion. N The Common Council intends to erect a temporary building in Hyde Park fo.* the ball to the Prince. It is to accommodate 5,000 persons.
