IMPORTANT FROM OTAKI.

DEPARTURE OF THE HAU HAUS FROM THE DISTBICT. Ouu own correspondent writes from Otaki on the 15th inst. .- — Ifc is with no small degree of satisfaction that I am enabled to record that tho Hau Haus have taken their departure from this place on Monday morning last. Although the weather was of a most unpropitious character, and must have beon particularly uninviting to them, as they did not seem possessed of a superabundance of necessa^ apparel to protect, them ; yet as an attempt at punctuality was exercised by theso fanatics, aud haviug decided to start on this particular day, it would nofc do to break the rule, particularly on such a special occasion as taking their departure from here. Ifc is gratifying also to state that they havo been unsuccessful in gaining any number of proselytes, which was no doubt the object of their mission, aud not, as stated, to taugi over the death of tlie Queen Tapeora. Great credit is duo to Tamihana Te liauparaha aud the several native chiefs, for the very energetic and strenuous opposition they presented to these deluded fanatics ; and no doubt their hurried departure is mainly attributable to the- firm stand taken by the loyal natives. Since I handed you a copy of the petition which appeared in your journal, they have issued another, a copy of which I enclose, together with one from the natives afc Porirua, approving of the steps taken by the Otaki natives ; and one addressed to your journal, which they are anxious to havo published, so that tlie public may be ablo to sco to whom the credit is due of preventing the committal of any depredations by tho Hau Haus. Sixty-seven signatures aro now attached to the petition ; those natives who wero undecided, havo now willingly signed, and they aro most anxious to have tho arms and ammunition, not thafc thoy aro required for any immediate necessity or danger, but rather as a security for the future. [We regret extremely that tho translation ofthe documents in question has nofc been furnished in sufficient time for insertion in our present issue, but they will appear iv our next. Our correspondent has, however, furnished all the news of immediate importance. —Ed., W.L]
