PRISONERS OF WAR

THE' WAIHI ASSOCIATION SPLENDID START MADE . Keen interest has been aroused in the recently-formed Waihi and District Prisoners-of-War Relatives and Friends’ Association and if the daiice held in St. Joseph’s Hall in aid of the funds of the organisation last Friday evening is any criterion the association should not lack public support. There was an attendance of nearly 200 and ■ excellent music was provided by Tamihere’s Orchestra, while Mr R. J. Caundle very capably carried out the duties of M.C. A tasty supper was provided by members of the committee.

In the course of the evening the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, spoke of the objects of the association, which included social contact between the relatives and friends of men held prisoifer with a view to the exchange of news and views, and of discussing ways and means of helping to make easier the lot of such men. Not the least worthy of the objects, added the Mayor, was that of assisting those not so well situated financially, to prepare parcels of clothing for their menfolk —a task that in many cases imposed a heavy strain on slender resources, particularly in the case of mothers of families who were wholly dependent on military allowances. He congratulated the committee and all concerned and the public for its splendid response in making the initial function held under the auspices of the association such an outstanding success.
