FINE WAR SERVICE

APPEALS FOR LAST SONS LEFT COMMENT MADE BY BOARD Comment that in each case the family concerned was giving fine war service was made toy the chairman, Mr Edwin Edwards, at a sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board in Waihi yesterday when two men, for various reasons not able to do the work themselves, appealed in respect of the only sons now eligible for service who were left on their farm properties.

The first appeal was made by Mr G. R. Cullen, formerly in business in Waihi, and now farming a large property on the Whangamata Road. He appealed for Robert- McGee Cullen, and Mr F. C. V. Clark, who appeared for Mr Cullen, stated that of the family of six the eldest, a girl, was serving in a military hospital, while of the boys—apart from the reservist appealed for—one had been made prisoner of war in Crete, one was in the Air Force in England, and another was in camp in New Zealand. The only other boy was 10 years old. The farm had been bought for the boys. Mr Clark also appeared for Mr James Hughes, of Walmsley Road, who appealed on behalf of his 20-year-old son, Keith Ronald Hughes. Mr Clark said that reservist was the only eligible member of the family who was not in uniform. “We know the record of this family, and have commented on it previously,” remarked Mr Edwards, in granting an adjournment sine die in each case, reservists to continue to serve in the Home Guard.
