WAIHI W.C.T.U.

MONTHLY MEETING HELD

THE ABUSE OF ALCOHOL The monthly meeting of the Waihi branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held at the Baptist Church last Thursday, the president, Mrs H. W. Page, being in the chair.

After the opening hymn the president led devotions by reading part of the 17th Chapter of St. John, and spoke of the great power of prayer, giving some interesting aspects on the subject. Afterwards members spent a short time in prayer, special mention being made of those who suffered from the abuse of alcohol and the men in camps who resisted the temptation to drink. Some facts given were (from “New Zealand Herald”): “Kentucky, the home of mint julep, is swinging back to prohibition. Sixty-seven of its 120 counties have outlawed the sale of liquor and beer. The dry forces are trying to influence the forthcoming election in six more counties.” And this from a church poster: “Alcohol gives you a red nose; a white liver; a blue outlook; a brown taste; and a black eye. Why drink it?” It was reported that seven candidates, members of the Waihi Girls’ Life Brigade, had sat for the temperance examination the previous Saturday. The Vneeting closed with the benediction.

recalls the experience of the Allies in the last war, when information about British Imperial plans and movements frequently got through to the Turks. Alexandria and Cairo are full of spies and enemy agents. Several were rounded up in Alexandria, where local residents were found signalling to U-boats off the coast, and even supplying them with fuel. Sultan Hussein of Egypt was commonly suspected of more than sympathy with the Central Powers, and there was a good deal of mystery about his sudden death during the war.
