AMUSEMENTS.

THE LYRIC COSTUME COMEDY COMPANY. TOP-NOTCH ENTERTAINERS. Much interest is centred in the coming of the Lyric Costume Comedy Co., the well-known artists, who will appear at His Majesty’s Theatre to-night. Advance accounts acclaim them as real top-notchers in the realm of entertainment, both as soloists and concertedly. An outstanding feature of their proSrammo will be the harmonising section, [essrs Arthur Ripley and Herbert Richards (tenors), J. W. Ryan (bass), and Alan McElwaiu having a reputation second to none for their skilful artistry in part-singing. In fact, it is authoritatively stated that no orchestra is better balanced than these four voices. And the songs they choose, too, cannot fail to make a popular appeal, ranging as they do from simple homely ditties to tuneful ballads and delicate chansons. Each one understands the knack of getting the right emphasis of every line and word, and this also applies to the solo work. Mr McElwaiu is responsible for the humorous vein interspersed through the entertainment, and he could give points to many a visiting star with his natural comedy bent and facility in scoring ready laughs. Attractive aid will also be lent by Miss Jessie Bartlett (contralto), Mis:! Evelyn Harvey (pianist), and Miss Betlina Edwards (solo danseuse). We can confidently recommend this compact little company to music lovers. In addition a big star feature will be presented. “The Great White Trail,” with Miss Doris Kenyon in the leading role of Prudence Ware, the much-wrong-ed woman. “The Great White Trail” ii a story of the Yukon gold rush, when men in their mad rush for the precious metal fought untold hardships in ■ the frozen wastes of Alaska. Great untrod wastes of ice and snow, ice caves with stalagmites of ice, five to ten feet thick, enormous glaciers,in fact, all the wondrous beauties of frozen nature form the beautiful backgrounds to an appealing love story. It deals with estrangement of a husband and wife, and their final reunion through a pair of babyshoes, and gives the star, Doris Kenyon, the chance of her career. Her charm and magnetic beauty lend radiance ,to a story of real human appeal. The boa plan is at Upton’s, and patrons are advised to book early to save disappointment. The thirty-first annual meeting of the subscribers to the Wanganui Orphanage will take place on Saturday afternoon next at 3 o’clock, at St. Paul’s classroom, when it is hoped that all subscribers and friends of the Orphanage will make a point of being present. On account of the temporary stoppage of the tram service, it has been decided to meet in town this year, and not at the Orphanage as is usual.
