LIGHT RAILWAYS.

ENTHUSIASM IN WAIKATO

COAST TO COAST PROPOSAL. A considerable amount of preliminary work is being done in connection with the proposal to establish light railways in the Waikato, and the enthusiasm of those concerned is very 'great. The proposal to link up Te Awamutu with Pirougia is being warmly supported. The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, which initiated the light railway proposals in the Waikato, is at present communicating with the Matamata Town Board and Chamber of Commerce and the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce asking for their support of the proposal to link up Matamata and Tauranga with a light railway. In connection with this proposal it is pointed out that with a light railway from Kawhia to Prankton, the main line from Prankton to Matamata, and a light line from Matamata to Tauranga, it would be possible to complete the journey from coast to coast in about six hours, as against 10 or 12 hours at present.
