THE SUGAR SHORTAGE.

SERIOUS POSITION IN WELLINGTON.

(Per Urn ted Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 28

The sugar shortage has reached a stage in Wellington which has led four of the largest confectionery manufacturing concerns in the city to suspend operations in some departments. Other manufacturers are facing a similar position.

Mr Massey said last night that the matter was one for the Board of Trade to deal with. He hoped the worst phase of the shortage was over. The Sugar Refining Company’s works at Auckland were working at full capacity and producing over 200 tons daily. A Board of Trade officer was now in Auckland endeavouring to make arrangements for distribution to the best advantage of all concerned.
