ANZAC DAT.

ON WEDNESDAY, 25th INST,

The Mayor presided over a meeting yesterday afternoon of delegates of local bodies and of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the object of which was to arrange for the fitting celebration of Anzac Day, on the 26th inst It was decided that the Mayor should request the citizens to observe the day as a whole holiday. : Cr. E. F. Liffiton and Lieut. Aidridge were appointed a committee to ascertain what arrangements foi mornmo; service were contemplated by the various churches and to convene a meeting, of ministers if necessary. It was decided that a public gathering be held in the afternoon in Cook's Gardens on the same lines *s last year. A collection will be taken at the gates, the proceeds of which it was resolved should go to the Returned Soldiers' Association.

It was further resolved that the Mayor endeavour to arrange for a Minister of the Crown and for Sir James Carroll to visit Wanganui and give addresses at the, afternoon meeting. Also that Dr, Newman, M.P., bo invited to give, a war lecture in the evening. The meeting then adjourned till Thursday next, at 5 p.m.
