THE TAEANIKI TOURNAMENT. Hawera won the champion shield at the Taranaki bowling tournament. The competing teams in the final were : I Hawera.—Eudkin, Hodge, W. Robertson, and Foy (skip.) 1 Fitzroy.—Jury, Dingle, Eennell, and Abbott (skip.). The competitors (says the Taranaki Nes) were, evenly matched and the game provided plenty of excitement for the onlookers. Abbott, as usual, was sloW to get to work on the scoring board, the game being 9-2 in Foy's favour on the seventh head; bnt the Fitzroy team then steadily crept up until at the eleventh headjthe board shewed 9 all, and the thirteenth head 11 all. Then Abbott forged ahead and kept in front till the 18th head, when he put in a disastrous drive which gave Foy a welcome five points, making the score 18.15 in Hawcra’s favour, an advantage which was iicreased by a gain of two on the next head. The position began to look favourable/for Foy, but Abbott secured two on the twentieth head, leaving him four to get for a win. Nothing less than four was any good, so' two heads were burned by Abbott in splendid style. Then came the final head, and when Ahfiott went down Hawera was laying the shot, and only drive could secure victory. Abbott made that drive and lay 5 up. - Excitement was now intense, the issue c f the contest depending entirely on the last bowl of the last head. Amid a hush c,f intense concentration Foy sent down his final delivery, which was well judged both as to direction and green, bnt had just sufficient strength to run through unless it touched one of the -bowls. Foy hid the luck, for his bowl made the touch, turned over, scored, and won the natch, the shield, and the tournament bv the luckiest shot of the day, tha score being: , Foy 21, Abbott 17. - .
