MUSICAL COMPETITIONS
ARE THEY HARMFUL? (Per United Press Association). "WELLINGTON, March 22. A meeting to-night decided to form a New Zealand musical, literary, and oratorical competitions society, to competitions similar to those in other centres. A letter was read from the representatives of the Society of Professional Musicians, protesting against the proposal, 1 was urged that competitions are of nq artistic value to the community, and in some respects exercise more or less injurious influences. Amateurs should be kept free from temptation to become other than amateurs, in the true sense of the teiyn* and love music for its own sake. The publicity and money prizes offered at competitions provide temptations leading to the* interruption of the studens’ regular studies. The nervous strain induced byj public performance and the false value set upon success were also objections. (Pet United Press Association).
