The annual meeting of the Wanganui Trotting Chib opened to-day on the racecourse, which had been kindly placed at the disposal of the club by the Wanganui Jockey Club. The weather was fine, and there was a fair attendance of spectators. The track was in excellent condition, and as the fields were large the racing was of an Interesting description. The Wanganui Garrison Band, under Conductor A. Wade, was in attendance, and performed the following programme:—March, “Through Bolts and Bars”; selection, “Old Favourites”; Valse, “Sepcrabre”; selection. “'Arcadians”; selection, “Falstaff”; selection. “Our Miss Gibbs”; valse.

“Hollar Prince”; selection, “Balkan Princess"; air varia, “Welsh Melody”; overture, “Le Diadem”; valse, “Waltz Dream”; inarch, “One of the Best.'" The .excellent music supplied was keenly appreciated by the club’s patrons. Speculation was fairly brisk, a fair sum being handled by Messrs Neylon and Spriggcn ■. who handled the totalisators in their usual business-like way. Mr Ulic Shannon, who filled the dual position of handicapper and starter, had a busy day, but he got through with credit to himself and to the club. Mr Selby .Morton, the .secretary, had all the arrangements in good order, and the result was that the conduct of the day’s racing left nothing to be desired. Mr Tom Nixon, who had charge of the publican’s booths, was well patronised, the quality of the liquid refreshments he dispensed being favourably commented on, while tlu- same may be said of the catering. which was done by Dustin’S, Ltd., in that firm’s usual up-to-date style. Lady Victor .started off Rest amongst the limit horses, and led to the entrance to the straight, where she broke, Fashion going on in the lead, with Cliff coming fast. The latter was in front at the six furlong post, and opened out a big gap, which he had no difficulty in maintaining, winning by 50 yards from Fashion, with Wild Maid a similar distance behind the second horse, and just ahead of Lady Victor, who would not settle down to her work, though she trotted well at times- Time, 4.19. KIRKWOOD HANDICAP, of 20 sovs; 11 miles. H. Jones’ GATHER NO MOSS, by Victor, 45sec (F. Jones) 1 J. Katie G. trotted well at the start, and led past the post, followed by Apology and Gather no Moss. The latter kept getting up in the air. At the bcud Apology closed up on Katie G., Gather no Moss also coming fast. The latter broke when almost abreast of the other two at the entrance to the straight. Shortly afterwards the other pair also got up. Gather uo Moss settled dowu again, and trotting fast, just got home by half a length, the third horse close up. Time, 4-miu osec.

WANGANUI CUP HANDICAP, of 60 sovs., and silver cup presented by Mr H. F. Nicholls; distance 2 miles. W. Plaskett’s b g REDLAC. 4yrs, by Prince Imperial, 28secs. (Owner) ... 1 A. J. Redlac, trotting well, took charge six furlongs f»m home, and won easily by 30 yards from Pearlie Maid, Glcnidol bciug a good third. Time,,5.14. The hack markers had no chance of getting up to the limit horses. Tc Wahauau won by 20yds, with Apology 30yds behind Jewel Chimes. The tattler finished very fast over the last quarter of a mile.
