LONDON WOOL MARKET. The New Zealand Toau and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report having received lire following advice from their Loudon house: — ' Wool.—The first scries of sales which opened here on the 17th January terminated on the 7th inst, of the available quantity 181,000 bales having been sold, of which 66,000 bales were taken for the Continent and 4000 bales for America, whilst 17,000 bales remain on hand. The market for merino, particularly for good greasy combing, continued firm to the close, but the improvement in crossbroa noted iu the second week was- not maintained. Direct American purchases of the tatter, were practically confined to the beat lots of medium quality, but it is understood that a considerable portion of the quantity taken by I'orkshirc operators will ‘ba used to satisfy United States orders for “eased” wool.
At the close the position, ‘as compared with the doss of the December sales, was as follows; Greasy Merino.—Super, par; .medium, par to 5 per cent, lower; inferior and faulty, 5 per cent, lower. Scoured Merino.—Super and medium, 5 per cent, lower; inferior and faulty, 5 to 7-£ per cent, lower. Greasy Crossbred.—Fine, par to 5 per cent, lower; medium and coarse, 71 to 10 per cent, lower. Scoured Crossbred.—Fine, par; medium, and coarse, 5 per cent, lower. SHpe crossbred. 5 percent. lower. Lambs’.—Merino and crossbred, about par.
LONDON WOOL SALES
The Bank of New Zealand has received (he following cable from its London office:—‘The market is strong for coarse crossbreds. Prices are unchanged. Medium crossbred 5 to 71 per cent, higher; all kinds of lambs’ wool and halfbred- are 7£ to 10 per cent, higher. Current prices for North Island farmers’ lots:—Coarse crossbreds 36 to 40’s quality, average condition, tkl to 9td per lb, medium crossbreds, 44 to 46’s quality, 9Jd to lOid per lb, fine crossbreds 50’s, quality, 12'jd to 14d per lb. Current prices for South Island farmers’ lots, Canterbury style—lnferior merino, common, 60 to 64’s quality, 9}d to lOd per lb, sup. meirno super, 60 to 64’s quality, 12$ dto 13Vd per lb; half or quarter-bred, 56’s quality, average condition 12|d to 13|d per lb.”
