GASWORKS
That the speaker had objected to the change whereby the Mayor was no longer chairman of all committees was not correct. He had, at the request of Messrs Muir and Battle, willingly acceded to a request that Councillors should be given charge of some of the committees, to give them more interest in their work. Mr Muir was anxious to be chairman of the Gasworks Committee, and the result was apparent to all. Mr Muir had advocated extensions, renewals, and maintenance being dope out of j revenue, but had forgotten to state that over £1500 profits had been spent in extensions alone, . and that the £12,000 of plant discarded was before Mr Mackay's Mayoralty. To withdraw the gas profits, as advocated by Mr Muir, from the relief of rates, would mean a large increase in the rates levied.
