State Forests, £30,642.— A long discussion arose on the rapid depletion of the colonial forests, the undue preference shown the South Island in the matter of State nurseries, the necessity for ordinary Land Boards to use discretion in compelling the State tenants to clear, and the need for spending more than £500 on State planting. The vote passed unaltered. State Coal Mines, £135,655.— The discussion on this item had not concluded when the House adjourned at 5.20. The House resumed at 7.30. The item, State coal mines, £135,655, was passed. Progress was reported. After further discussion the vote passed. Scenery Preservation, £7750. — Passed after discussion. Land for Settlements, £7500. — Passed unaltered. Maori Land Settlement, £2000.— Passed unaltered. Public Trust Office, £27,432.— Passed - Government Insurance Department, £57,488. — Passed. Government Accident Insurance, £8500. — The vote passed. State Fire Insurance, £10.411.— Passed. Government Advances to Settlers, £112,846.— Passed. The ordinary Estimates were finished and reported. LOAN ACT AMENDMENT BILL. The Premier moved the second reading. He explained that it contained a provision for the redeeming of old war loans and for making a sinking fund for the Land for Settlements Account. The Bill passed through all its stages. The House adjourned at 11.30 to 2.30 on Monday.
