WAVERLEY NOTES.

(From our own correspondent). WAVERLEY, October 18. Edward Laurent, labourer, of Waverley, was arrested on a warrant by Constable O'Brien for committing an aggravated assault on Samuel Erwin, of Waverley. Accused was brought before Mr J. Muir and Mr D. McDonald, Justices of the Peace, this afternoon. Laurent admitted the offence under provocation. Erwin appeared with eyes blacked and other marks of rough treatment and gave evidence of assault, denying provocation. Laurent was fined £1 and costs 7s. It appears the parties had a dispute over possession of a paddock, which led to the assault. A good deal of excitement was caused here on Tuesday through a horse being driven by Mr F. McDonald taking fright at Wall's wood saw on the Station road. The hoTse which was a flighty one, bolted round Dr Harvey's corner, through the town, and down the flourmill road. Fortunately ?wo young men who were riding along the road saw that there was no chance of Mrs McDonald checking its mad career, so they galloped after it and stopped it by one getting on each side and taking hold of the reins, preventing what might have been a serious accident. Mrs McDonald deserves much praise for the plucky manner in which she sat in the trap and steered the horse clear of all traffic.
