ALLEGED BREACH OF THE GAMING

AUCKLAND, December 1.

Proceedings were taken against a number of stationers before R. W. Dyer, S.M., at the Police Court to-day, for selling slips to the chief detective, entitling him to compete in the Parliamentary shield competition, upon grounds that the competition was a lottery. Mr Mays, on behalf of the Crown Prosecutor, submitted that ie was purely a matter of guess work to forecast the successful candidates, and pointed out that even Mr Massey or Mr Seddon could not do it. Mr Cotter, for the defence, submitted that it involved skill and judgment to estimate correctly. Tho Magistrate's decision will be given to-morrow.
