NELSON, December 1. At the Magistrate's Court to-day tb» Registrar of Electors ' prosecuted Harry Atmore, a candidate for the Nelson seat, for having committed a breach of the Electoral Act, section 7, sub-section C, in witnessing an enrolment signature without hearing the person signing declaring it her own. A plea of guilty and ignorance of the law was set up. Defendant was fined one shilling and costs .£1 10s.
AUCKLAND, December 1. William Oldhain, a traveller, recently employed by Heather, Robertson, and Co., merchants, came before Mr Justice FJdwards in the Supreme Court for sentence on a charge of having , misappropriated about ,£lO2 of his* employers' money. Mr J. C. Martin (prisorer's counsel) informed his Honour that the sum of ,£lO2 has now been paid back to his employers by the prisoner's friends. His Honour said that, in view of the restitution of the money, the excellent character given to the accused by several witnesses, and the recommendation for leniency given' by his employers, he would give the accused a chance to retrieve his character. He would convict him, and order him to come up for sentence if called on.
