Sir, — Mr Bassett, at St. John's, after indulgirtg in some nursery rhymes and common place platitudes, let the cat out of the bag re his status as a political candidate., and it would appear that Mr Gilbert Carson is responsible for Mr Bassett's aspirations being suppressed for so many lopg years. Some of us arc of opinion that our late respected townsman, Mr Freeman E. Jackson, was also suppressed to make way for the groat Gilbert, who, while exhibiting' an excessive greed feu- any and ':ill public positions has not shown such conspicuotis ability ns to entitle him to the flattering adulations of his servile henchman. He certainly has always given a consistent support to the non-progressive Conservative Party, and by his vitriolic pen and. A r oice shown an eagerness to belittle every Liberal candidate including our illustrious leader, the late Hon. John Ballance and the progressive party, of which he was such a brilliant leader. — I am, etc.,
