DEATH OF A GREAT CHIEF.
The last enemy has taken away one of the best Maoris on the Wanganni River. ~~ Haimona Aoterangi died at Koriniti last Wednesday at the advanced age of 85. He was a Chief of the old time, strictly honorable, singularly kind-hearted, . and exceedingly grataftil for kindness HhOwn to him ja raro quality among Maoris)* It (Sari be eaia o$ juUH that h6 tfaS ft iaWw to His people. Haimona was elected chief of the Ngatipa in 1854. It was owing to his great courage at the battle of Moutoa in 1864 that the Queen's Maoris rallied and won a fight that was of great import; ance to thia town and dtetrlo*. Weii All seenied to ba lost, he ..spoke the memorable words — " Hero I figut and here I die." He fought in all the subsequent wars in the capacity of captain, i» the native contingent, and received a small pension, which was recently increased.
