THE NAPIER UNEMPLOYED.

♦ They Objeot to the Labour Bureau(Per United Press Association.) N&r-ntß, May 21. There is a peculiar ittato of things in connection with the unemployed here. Complaints have from time to time been made that the reports of the Labour Bureau as to the state of the labour market; here are not accurate. This appears to be due to a marked disinclination ;to register with the Bureau. The other day a meeting of the unemployed was held, when the Mayer was informed by the police that only «me man had regi&terea. He advised them to register iv view of the Mvaral Government building contracts bains; pat in hand. Since then eighty more name*, many those of carpenters, have baan banded to the Mayor, bat only two or three have been j registered at the Bureau. The only reason given by the men, when asked at the meeting why they did not register, was that they feared they would be prosecuted for having no visible means of support. The Mayor endeavoured to reassure them on that point, but apparently unsuccessfully. A considerable number of carpenters will soon be required, and ths polioe are to select them from the registered list, but there are not enough carpenters on the list. The balk of ths xnea are undoubtedly oapable and anxious to work, but for some unaccountable reason will not sro the right way to get it.
