THE YEOMAN OF THE GUARD.

Production To-morrow by Marton Operatic Society. The production of Gilbert and Sullivan's opera " Tho Yeoman of the Guard " in the Oddfellows' Hall to-mono ir by the Marton Operatic Booiety is surrounded with considerable interest, and as the composition is new to Wanganoi music-lovers we append a brief synopsis of the plot. It appears that Colonel Fairfax, wrongfully accused of sorcery by his cousin, Sir Olaranoo Polfcwhistle, Secretary of State, is under sentence of death in fche Tower. On learning from his son, just arrived to join the Yeomen of the Guard, that the long-eipsoted reprieve has not been issued, Sergeant Meryl arranges with his daughter a plot to affect the Colonel's escape. Thijis accomplished by Phabe's wheedling the keys from her admirer Shadbolt, and the Oolonel impersonating Leonard among the Yeomen. Before escaping, however, he privately marries Elaie Maynard in order to keep his kinsman ont of his estate, which would devolve on him if the Colonel died unmarried. His escape, after marrying Elsie, who had agreed to the marriage on the understanding that he was to die at once, complicates matters all round. However, as Leonard Meryl, he gains Elsie's affections, and on Shadbolt and Dame Carrubhors discovering the plot formed by the Sergeant and Phrebe, three weddings are arranged, with more or l«3s satisfaction to the principals concerned. The cast of characters appears in our advertising columns, and from press oritioisms received it is evident that the Society has spared no expense in staging the opera, besides which principals, chorus, and orchestra receive a high merit of praise for their efforts. We expeofc to sec a crowded home.
