The first competition of the second class of the Wanganui Rifle Volunteers took place this morning, when the followiug scores were made :—: —
At the R.M. < ourc to-day, the following ing cases were heard : — H. -^. Jackeoa v 0. McDonald, claim £5 12s, adj urned for a week ; H. I. Jones v A. E Lewis, claim £5 9a 4d ; adjourned for proof of service of summons j F. Hall v S. Lever, claim £7 13b lid ; fresh summons to be issued; Jane Burrows vT. Bruntlett, claim £11 Is Od ; judgment for plaintiff with costs ; P. McKmnon v X Cahill, claim £5 5s ; judgtor "plaintiff with £4 4s. A case, L. K. Brewer v Wm. Lowes, claim £45 in connection with a horse, occupied the Court for some time. A question of warranty was concerned.
At the deputation this morning the Mayor uked Mr Ballance as to whether he could say anything about the cry that was going forward with reference to the present rai way tariff, more especially as it was known that all over the colony waggons were being used against the railway. In jEply Mr Ballance said he did not think 1 railway system could ever be manHanaged by anyone without creating dissatisfaction in some part-. There was scarcely lease where it waß said that the rates were ticessive, and wh re traffic competed with to, but wb<* the" department could show nwozno-wtiS'Hhe jates could not be lowered. Be had enquired into the case at Invercar'gill, and found that thia was simply an attempt to force down the railway rates. They could carry on the trade during the summer months, the low price of oats enabling them to compete with the railway, but they could not do it in winter.
