TAUPO.

SKIRMISH BETWEEN TE KOOTI

AND HENARE

HEAVY FIRING SUBSEQUENTLY

HEARD.

The Hawke's Bay Herald of the 14th inst., gives the following account of operations at Taupo. A portion of this intelligence^ we have already given to the public :—

Intelligence reached town on Sunday night that, on Thursday the 9th inst., Te Kooti, with a force of 100 foot and 80 horse, came from Tokana to Tauranga, and attacked Henare Tomoana, After a short engagement, Te Kooti was forced to retire, with the loss of three killed and several apparently wounded ; the loss on our side was two wounded. . Te Kooti retreated upon Tokanu, where he is said to have a large pah. Colonel McDonnell, with the Wanganui and Patea natives, would join Henare on Saturday last ; and all the mounted constabulary under Colonel Herrick have received orders to support him, so we have no doubt that in a very few days a satisfactory account will be received of Te Kooti and his fol-

lowers.

Yesterday afternoon, further intelligence came to hand by way of Tapuaeharuru and Runanga. It was to the effect that at Tauranga (Taupo,) on Saturday night, heavy firing was heard in the distance. No details have come to hand, but it is presumed Te Kooti may have resumed his attack upon Henare Tomoana.

The Colonial Government steamer St. Kilda left Wellington yesterday for Napier, with Ropata and a few Ngatiporou on boarcl. The former will, should occasion require it, proceed to the East Coast for reinforcements.
