REDS RETREAT

TRAIL OF DEAD CONFLICT IN CHINA. i?reßß A ssooiation Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received Monday, 8.45 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Sunday. Tho nature of the “Rods” retreat, following the death of their leader, Chuteh, under pressure of Government forces, was indicated by the trail of dead Communist soldiers between Iveiyang and Lungli, where General Chiang Kai Slick is successfully undertaking the extermination of “Red” marauders. A number of dead bodies strewn on tho mountainside in the possession of arms supports tho rumours that the leaders prefer killing their wounded sooner than permit their falling into tho hands of the Government troops with a possibility of disclosing information.

Tho “Reds’ ” morale is reported to have been completely broken, following Chuteh’s death, and General Chiang Kai Slick considers their deefat only a matter of time. Two thousand Communists, fully armed, but not prepared to offer resistance, have been captured, Government troops declaring that others are willing to follow suit, providing the Government refrain from summary execution.

The fate of the missionaries, Messrs Hayman and Bosshardt, who were captured by tho Kaeichow “Reds” last August, is still unknown. Captives declared that they believed both had been killed.
