FOOTBALL

FIASCO AT DARWIN.

(Received Monday, 10.20 a.m.) DARWIN, This Day.

An Australian rules football competition, which has been the cause of much unpleasantness in Darwin, ended in a fiasco on Saturday, when a white team did not tako the field against a halfcaste team in the final contest and the latter, after filing into the field and kicking a goal, were declared the winners.

Following incidents of the previous Saturday, when spectators invaded the field while members of white and black semi-final teams fought, the remaining white team delivered an ultimatum that it would not play in the final match except under an umpire whom they nominated. The controlling authority refused this demand.

The match which was to have been played at Eketahunq on Saturday between the Red Star and Eketahuna Old Boys senior teams, was postponed on account of the wet weather.

At Wellington, on Saturday the Onslow seniors defeated Martinborough by 6 points to 3 (a try by Beale).

The Old .Boys seniors defeated Greytown seniors at Greytown on Saturday by 14 points to 6.

The Red Star Football Club’s procession at Memorial Park on Saturday next will be headed by the Pipe Band which has kindly offered its services for the occasion, an action which is much appreciated by the club.
