The Shropshire Horse

Members of the Auckland Hospital Board studied with puzzled faces an item, “Shropshire horse, £200,” which appeared on a list of proposed items of capital expenditure for the coming year. It was necessary for the medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Graven, to explain that a “Shropshire horse” was a special operating table used in orthopaedic cases, particularly for fracture of the leg and certain spinal troubles. It allowed the patient practically to be suspended in mid-air, and it was also posible to carry out N-ray examinations while the operation was in progress. There were 118 orthopaedic cases in the hospital at the present time, said Dr. Craven. Operations were frequent, and a “Shropshire horse” would be of the greatest assistance to surgeons.
