CORRESPONDENCE

THE GREAT EASTERN. (To the Editor). Sir, —Would you kindly inform me, through the columns of your paper, when the Great Eastern was built,'its length and tonnage, what it was mostly used for, and when it was scrapped?— I am, etc., ENQUIRER.

(The Great Eastern steamship was built by Scott Russell at Millwall, and was launched in 1858. It was then the largest vessel afloat, measuring 691 feet in length, and 83 feet in breadth, and of 22,800 tonnage. It had eight engines, divided between her screws and paddles. The vessel was used for some years in cable laying in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and in 1888 was sold to be broken up.—Ed., W.D.T.)
