ILLEGAL STRIKE
WATERSIDERS PINED. Holding that there was sufficient evidence to show that a breach of the law had taken place, Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., imposed fines of £1 each on 58 waterside workers in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday. A penalty of £5 on each of 59 men, on the ground that they took part in an unlawful strike arising out of a dispute with their employers, had been claimed by the inspector of awards. The case against the defendants, who are all members of the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union, were heard together, except that of one man who denied that he was asked to work.
The charge against him was withdrawn. The proceedings were taken under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, 1913. The magistrate fixed security for appeal at ten guineas, to cover all the defendants. On the conclusion of the case, Mr J. Roberts, for defendants, announced that appeals would be brought to the Court of Arbitration.
