THE DEPRESSION
AND NEW ZEALAND A VISITOR’S OPINION., Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received Tuesday, 9.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Mr E. Hirst, Chairman and General 'Manager of the British General Electric Company, who has just arrived from New Zealand, says the depression has not affected New Zealand as seriously as some other countries, for from outside appearances everyone seems to be happy and well dressed. The grumbling about conditions in New ■Zealand was caused through lack of ability to compare the conditions there with the conditions among other nations and peoples rather than the actual 'hardships that one meets with in everyday life. “One of the most astounding features I experienced on tho trip was the spirit of tenacity shown by the people at Hastings and Napier in the earthquake rebuilding operations,” he said.
