NECK BROKEN
BUT STILL ALIVE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. A young man lies in the New Plymouth Hospital Avith “a broken neck,” and Avith an excellent prospect of complete recovery. Ho is Earle Coleman. Swimming in the To Henui River, he dived and struck a branch Avith his head, and Avas found lying on his back at the bottom of the pool. Rona Pepperell ? a girl member of the Surf Club, rescued him in a dazed condition. Resuscitation methods Avere applied and ho Avas admitted to hospital. An X-ray examination disclosed a definite fracture of the body of the vertebrae, and a slight displacement, but so far as could be ascertained, the spinal column Avas not seriously damaged, though some of the nerves may be tAvisted.
The only bodily disability Coleman is suffering is a slight weakness in one arm, slight anaesthesia of the skin of the other arm, and pains in the neck.
Dr. G. 11. Thomson said there Avas a strong probability of Colemn’s recovery. His case was one of perhaps three or four recorded in Ncav Zealand. Coleman Avas extremely fortunate that the rescuers used care in handling him. He told the doctor he Avas conscious practically the Avhole time.—(P.A.) *
