MASTERTON RACES

mac MEETING. BALLOON WINS CHIEF EVENT. The Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting was concluded on Saturday in fine weather. Owing to fairly heavy rain showers all the morning, the attendance was not as good as it might have been. Although the track was a' little on the soft side, the condition's were good, and some excellent racing was witnessed. Balloon, who was little fancied 'by the investing public, created a surprise by winning the Masterton Handicap in good style. The Grandstand Handicap went to Habit, piloted by H. Gray, the most successful rider at the meeting, who rode four horses to victory and one to second place. He was also on Jayson, the favourite in the Maiden Stakes, who was left at the post and took no part in the race at all.

A dispute arose as to whether- W. Broughton was to ride Sir Ronald or Crash in the last race. Both trainers were under the impression that Broughton was to ride their respective horses. Sir Ronald went out to the starting post with W. Broughton up, and Crash was left without a ridrer. After a ten minutes’ or so consultation, during which Crash was on the point of being scratched, Manson, 741bs. overweight, was engaged. The race was half an hour over the scheduled time of starting.

The amount put through the totalisator was £11,962, compared with £18,734 last year, a decrease of £6772.
