ADVERTISING.

BIG EXHIBITION OPENED. (By Telegraph—-Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday. An advertising exhibition, organised bj the Auckland Advertising Club, Avas opened by the Minister of Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) this afternoon. The display is the largest demonstration of modern advertising methods hold in the Dominion. Ncav Zealand manufacturers form an important feature, while there is an exhibit shoAving the AvorlclAvide activities of the Government Publicity Department. Mr Young emphasised that one of the leading advertising mediums was the daily newspaper, Avhich rendered a great service to the community. Mr Young said in recent years the Government, recognising the value of publicity, had made displays at exhibitions in the United Kingdom and Canada, over £200,000 having been‘spent in this direction in the past five years. With a view to attracting tourists from Australia, an intensive publicity campaign avh-s now being conducted at the cost of £SOOO, Avhile in addition to publicity in Britain more ivas being done to advertise the attractions of the Dominion in Canada, India and South Africa. The Minister referred to signs of returning prosperity in the Dominion, and emphasised that the unfavourable trade balance of £3,000,000 in 1927 had been changed to a favourable balance of £10,000,000 this year, and this and the condition of the finance market justified a reduction in bank rates, Avhich the Minister urged Avas necessary for the farmer and the business man. The Minister also appealed for preference to Britain in buying, pointing out the mutual benefits of trading Avithin the Empire.
