STAGE EXECUTIONS
i& A ’• - ~ QUESTION IN COMMONS. (Received Thursday, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, Wednesday. Questioned concerning a recent stage performance representing the execution of Charles Peace in which .John Ellis, a former executioner, is appearing, Sir \Y. Joynson Hicks said that executioners were employed by sheriffs. He was not empowered to make conditions. Anyhow these did not apply to executioners after retirement. Mr J. P. Gardner: “Is it public policy to have executions on the stage?” Sir 11. Brittain: “Cannot the matter be left to public opinion and the Press?” Sir W. Joynson Hicks said he was sure the House regarded such exhibitions as unseemly.
