THE COMET.
MANY WATCHERS. LONDON, Alonday. Alanv watchers with telescopes waited for the Skjcllerup comet on Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath, and other high ground in London, but the sky was overcast, and the conditions even defeated the Greenwich Observatory. Doctor W. 11. Stevenson, President of the British Astronomical Association, however, hopes that the comet will be seen this evening and to-morrow about 4.45, as German advices say that the visitor is of the first magnitude, and will be visible in northern latitudes for at least ten days, when the moon fortunately is absent. Telegrams from Berlin state that the best observation obtained was in Hanover on Friday, when the comet- was most brilliant, near the sun, with a short tail turned upwards away from the sun. It is expected that the stumpy tail will increase in length daily until after Christmas. The sky in Germany unfortunately has been cloudy since the Hanover observation.
